Ahh, it has been confirmed that the new Yankee Stadium bleacher section won't be serving alcohol. Not that this should be a surprise, as the old one shut down their taps over a decade ago to the creatures. The real injustice here is a lack of cheap, low quality booze than fans can enjoy before and after a game in the Bronx. Now I understand that not many fans shelling out $300 per seat want to spend their nights crammed in with Franky from Hoboken shot gunning PBR's. But it is ridiculous for the fan like me, willing to pay $20 for a bleacher seat, going across the street to Stan's and paying $6 at least per Miller Lite.
First off for those who haven't attended a game at Yankee Stadium South, this is the business model for how pre and post game bars in the direct vicinity of baseball stadiums should be run. My preference is Pickle's Pub, but right next door, so close to the Camden that you can hear roll call is Slider's and Gino's. As you can see before the game these places get packed both in and outside, and offer affordable beers, between $2 and $4, and even better and cheaper bar food. And if you're not too hoity toity to pound some dogs, there's the famous local dollar dog vendors right there for you. It's a great location, and even better crowd, I have gone to games there by myself before and just mingled in with the crowd and had a great time. Why can't this happen at Yankee Stadium?
I do have (somewhat of) a secret though, and that is the Stop Deli & Twin Donut on 161st Street right around the corner from Stan's. It is just like your local deli, if you're lucky you can score a seat next to all the NYPD officers biding their time before they throw all the rowdy fans in the drunk tank. And they offer a slew of beers, bottled or canned, small or large, for prices around $1 per bottle. And in addition they have a monster sub collection on their menu with names like Bernie's Grand Slam, Paulie's Pastrami and Mariano's Parmagiana, how could you go wrong?
So until the Bronx creates its own affordable and fun pre and post game environment that doesn't rival its in stadium prices, head over to Twin Stop, and save me a seat.
